Meru is located ion east Kenya. Meru has a population of 42,677. Situated on the Kathita River on the northeast slope of Mt Kenya, Meru is a lovely tourist spot. Meru is placed five miles north of the equator. Meru is an area of mixed forest, clearings, small towns, villages and rural farms.
The place is mainly inhabited by Meru tribe. It is headquarter of Meru Central District. Meru is a center of business, agriculture, education on the northeast Kenya. It is a thriving town with hotels, transportation terminals, banks, cafes, and bars. Coffee, tea, timber, and dairy products are produced here.
Meru gives too much emphasis on education. Meru has got some technical schools such as Meru Technical Institute, Meru College of Technology, and Kenya Methodist University. Some teacher training colleges are also there.
Meru is one of the important coffee producing areas. Corresponding to the two rainy seasons coffee is grown twice a year. But main crop in Meru comes at a different time because of the different weather pattern on the northeast slope of Mt Kenya. It grows at the high-altitudes in the volcanic soil of Meru. Meru is also the prime Miraa growing area. As Mira is financially lucrative to produce some of the farmer prefer growing Miraa.
One can get to Meru from the northwest or southeast side of Mt Kenya respectively via Embu and Nanyuki and Timau. Meru can be reached by air and road from the following places:
