Calling Kenya

Calling Kenya a service provided by East African Community(EAC) previously. With the disintegration of EAC the telecommunications department of Kenya fell under the aegis of Kenya Posts and Telecommunication Corporation(KPTC). The Communication Corporation of Kenya(CCK) was formed in1998 as an independent organization.

In 1999 KPTC was divided to form Telkom Kenya. It is the organization that controls all the landlines in Kenya. Telkom Kenya has another sub-division,Jambonet,one of the frequently used ISP in Kenya. However the service provided by Telkom Kenya falls short of the increasing demand for telecoms services. Discussions about the privatization of this sector is in progress.

The shortage of landlines in Kenya have resulted in the growth of a booming industry of mobile phones. Mobile phone companies like Celtel and Safaricom are targeting Kenya as a lucrative market. Celtel,a basic GSM provider has a cellular service that covers the whole nation.

Telecommunication Service Providers Association(TESPOK) was established in 1999 as a non-profit organization that provides service in many parts of Kenya. TESPOK has tried to highlight the problems in Telecommunication in Kenya through the media.

The Country Calling Code of Kenya is 254.
