The River Jordan rises from the confluence of three major springs and streams located on the southern and western slopes of Mount Hermon. Jordan River rises in Syria and drains into the Dead Sea. In Christianity the New Testament states that River Jordan is known as the place where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Visitors from all over the world admires The River Jordan for it is one of the most significant features of the Palestinian landscape.

Historically and religiously, The River Jordan is considered to be one of the world's most sacred rivers. In 1964, Israel constructed a dam that diverts water from the Sea of Galilee, a major Jordan River water provider. In the same year Jordan constructed a channel that diverted water from from the Yarmouk River, another main tributary of River of Jordan. Syria has also built reservoirs that catch the Yarmouk's flow into The River Jordan. One environmentalist said that the three countries Israel, Jordan and Syria has replenished the Jordan River with sewage water, agricultural runoff and salt water.
In the Bible The River Jordan forms as the source of fertility to a large plain called “the garden of God” on account of its luxuriant vegetation. In Bible Jordan River played many symbolic roles. It is also mentioned that The River Jordan can signify death itself, with the crossing from life into Paradise or Heaven.
The waters of The River Jordan are an extremely important resource to the dry lands of the area Jordan.
