Jordan Valley

The Jordan Valley is one of the most visited tourist destination in Jordan. The low-lying strip cleaves down the country’s western border. Jordan Valley is a part of the Great Rift Valley, which expands downward to East Africa. The valley of Jordan is divided into several sub regions. These regions have distinct geographical characteristics.

The northern part of the Jordan Valley where the great Jordan River flows is known as the Ghor. The year-round agricultural climatic condition, the perfect soil fertility and sufficient water supply of Ghor is perfect for agricultural development. Ghor is called the “food bowl of Jordan”.

The Jordan River is an integral part of the Jordan Valley. Originating from several sources the river flows down into Lake Tiberias, 212 meters below the sea level. At 400 meters below sea level Jordan River drains into the Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea is an attraction both for leisure and medical tourism. The salty water and the black mud are used for several medical treatments. Further down on the south of the Dead Sea the green valley of Jordan suddenly turns into the hot and dry desert known as Wadi ‘Araba. The Dead Sea and the “Arabah desert” both have Biblical references.

In the early 1860’s the city of Jordan Valley was established by some miners and cattlemen in the south-east corner of Oregon. The small city is inhabited by nearly 450 people. Most of them earn their living by farming and cattle raising.

There are several other remarkable locations situated in the beautiful land of Jordan Valley.
