In recognition of the key role of education in the development of human resources, the government of Jordan has given great emphasis on the development of a well integrated, all compassing educational system.
Higher education along with primary and secondary education has been prioritized, to put Jordan on the road to intellectual development.
History of Jordan Higher Education:
- The era of higher education in Jordan dawned during the nineteen sixties, with the setting up of several Teacher's Colleges in various parts of the country.
- The University of Jordan, the first public university to be set up Jordan, was founded in 1962.
- in 1976 Yarmouk University was established.
- The acceptance of the proposal for the formation of private universities by the Council of Higher Education, led to the birth of Amman University in 1990. This is the first private Jordan University.
- Community Colleges set up in 1981, provide education not based on university curriculum.
Higher Education Institutions in Jordan:
Higher education in Jordan is provided at the universities and consists of Undergraduate Education, Postgraduate Education and Doctorate. Private universities in Jordan are thirteen in number, where as number of public universities is eight.
Important universities in Jordan are; The University of Jordan, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Al-Hussein bin Talal University, Yarmouk University, Amman University, Applied Science University, Jordan Academy of Music, University College of Educational Sciences, Amman Arab University for Graduate Studies and many more.
The Council of Higher Education, Jordan:
The Council of Higher Education is the most important constituent part of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Jordan, which is responsible for implementing the post secondary education policies of the government. The Accreditation Council is also a part of this ministry.
