It is recommended, that in case of cities tourists can opt for some other transportation options, such as, trains, subways and buses, which are generally a better choice in metropolitan areas. But if visitors want to travel around rural Japan, then it is recommended that they should go for a car rental option, as access of public transportation in the rural Japan can be problematic as well as infrequent.
A rental car in Japan can also be a reasonably priced option, especially if visitors are traveling in groups.
A visitor renting a car in Japan, should keep certain things in mind such as that they should carry an International driving license or an international driving permit. Visitors should collect an international driving permit from their home country, through the national Automobile Association, before leaving for Japan. The minimum age for driving in Japan is 18 years, so the driving license should bear testimony to the fact that one is above 18 years old.
