Japanese Martial art generally grew out of the various fighting techniques used by the samurai warrior class in feudal Japan. After the establishment of peace by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the early 1600's, the fighting skills of samurai were deviated into more spiritual activities. Over the years the Japan Martial arts were combined with Confucianism, Shinto and Zen Buddhism and treated as a means of spiritual as well as physical training.
There is a common motto behind all Japanese Martial arts and that is to beat a person physically protecting one from the physical hazard.
