Japanese way of gardening holds a very important place in the history and tradition of Japanese art. Japanese gardening has an interesting tradition of its own. There are several ways in which a garden in Japan is decorated. Japanese gardening ways have historical as well as religious associations in some cases. Japanese gardening has aesthetic values that can easily attract and capture the imagination of the onlookers.
There are three main ways of Japanese gardening . These are Tsukiyama way of gardening, Karensansui way of gardening and Chaniwa way of gardening. These Japanese gardens are very attractive in their own distinctive ways.
- Tsukiyama way of gardening : Tsukiyama means artificial hills. As the term suggests, in this way of gardening the objective remains to create a replica of some picturesque landscapes of Japan with tree, bridge, ways, pond and hill. Stepping away from the traditional way of decorating a garden with only several trees, this kind of garden has created a new way of gardening.
- Karensansui way of gardening : Associated with the Zen Buddhism, Karensasui way of gardening is a unique way of Japanese gardening. In this gardening the beauty of nature is represented through abstract ideas using stones, sand, patches of moss etc. This type of gardening gained popularity as a place where meditation can be done calmly.
- Chaniwa way of gardening : This way of gardening is perhaps most popular among all other kinds of gardening. Chaniwa gardens are associated with tea ceremony. In this garden there is a particular house where the ceremony takes place. Stones have a special part in this kind of gardens as there are stone made ways leading to the house. The stone paths are arranged with stone lanterns and stone basins. The whole set-up makes a very picturesque setting.
