Founded in 1877 by the Meiji Government, Tokyo University or the University of Tokyo is
Japan's leading educational institution.

First established as Tokyo Daigaku, the University of Tokyo initially consisted of four departments namely Law, Science, Literature and Medicine. The three institutions that were a part of the University of Tokyo at that time were Shoheiko for Japanese and Chinese Literature, Yogakusho for Occidental Studies and Shutosho for developing vaccinations. In 1886 the name Tokyo Daigaku was changed to Teikoku Daigaku or the Imperial University. In the same year Kobu Daigaku which was an Engineering College was incorporated into the University. Much later in 1947 the University finally adopted its present name University of Tokyo. Till then the number of departments in this University had also risen.
