Bobsled is common winter sports of the Jamaicans and is generally played by running down through the narrow twisted iced tracks by the help of gravity powered sled. Bobsled is also known as “Bobsleigh” in Brazil and it was hosted during the two Olympics and is popular game till date. The first kind of sleds was built by St. Moritz and later on various sledges came into existence. Initially the game use to hamper the working peoples and visitors on the streets so “half pipe tracks” were developed in 1870s for the proper enhancement of the game.
Modern bobsled tracks are constructed with the help of artificial ice and concrete and generally the tracks are 1200-1300 meters in length .Presently there are thirteen top level competition performing tracks in the world .The year 1897 witnessed the first bobsleigh club in St. Mortiz located in Switzerland.
Initially wooden sleds were used but previously they were replaced by the steel rods and then they were known as bobsleds. Bobsled of Jamaica has gained significance among the tourists and it is a major activity among the rich and adventurous tourists. Training is not the requirement of the game and the participants can rent the sleds and are ready to go.
The advent of the world cup series has subsequently added an existing dimension to this enthralling game of Bobsled and the versatile players are always rewarded. Bobsled has been part of the official program since the first Olympic Winter game in Mont Blanc in 1924 and is the center figure of the Jamaica Sports.
