Venice

Venice is situated in the north east Italy. The city comprises a stretch of numerous small islands situated along the Adriatic sea in the Venetian lagoon. Venice is famous all over the world for the canals. Canals in Venice serve as the way of communication and transportation. Gondola is the classical venetian boat which was used as a major source of transport in the olden days.

The carnival in Venice has always been an attraction to the tourists and inhabitants alike. Mask is the main feature of the Venice carnival. This carnival starts before two weeks of Ash Wednesday and ends on Shrove Tuesday ,which is the day before ash Wednesday.

While in vacation in Venice of Italy there are places which should not be missed. They are worth visiting and an experience not to forget throughout the life. The places undermentioned are the important places of visit in Venice :
  • Venice being a place on water. The bridges in the city takes an important place in every visitor's list, such as the Bridge of sighs . The place gets it name from the sighs of the prisoner who were taken to the prison cell from the doge's palace. This bridge connects the doge's palace to the prison cell.

  • Columns of San Marco and San Teodoro :brought from Constantinople and was erected in Piazzetta in the 12 th century. A statue of San Teodoro is set on top of a column and on the other column is set a bronze lion with wing,which is considered as a symbol of Venice.

  • Doge's Palace :It is situated near the St.Mark's Church on the eastern end of St.Mark's squar e. This is the place where venetian doges used to live and is a marvelous building.
The weather in Venice is rather hot and humid during summer. A heavy rainfall is experienced in November and December. Coldest months are January and February.

History of Venice says that from the beginning of 10th century jews started coming to the city for business purposes and settled there by late 14th century. with fear of jews overtaking some major projects in the economic spheres, in 1394, it was decided by the Senate that jews has to be expelled from the city. There were many laws implemented which prohibited the jews to own a land or to build a synagogue in the city.In 1516,the ruling council,that is, the doges decided to let the jews stay in the city but in a confined area of "Ghetto Nuova", this was the world's first "ghetto" which means "casting". 17th century saw the golden era in the ghetto,when the commerce and scholarship reached it's zenith.
