Music in Italy has been diverse since its conception and ranges across a broad scale of opera and instrumental classical music, the traditional styles of the country music, popular music, folk music, and imported style of music.

Classical music of Italy has been there since the beginning of the 20th century. Italian classical music included the Romantic and melodic style and often blended well with German harmonic juggernauts. The impressionism of Claude Debussy, stressed the creation of mood and atmosphere with the help of individual chords.

Opera originated in Italy in the late 1500s during the era of Florentine Camerata. Opera traditions in Italy first developed in Venice and Naples with the upcoming legends of this field like Claudio Monteverdi, Alessandro Scarlatti, and, later, of Gioacchino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, and Gaetano Donizetti

Sacred music in Italy had a strong effect of Catholicism. This type of music first came up in the Roman Catholic Churches of Italy. In 1800 th year, there came a trend of Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony by Palestrina, Lasso, Anerio, and others in the history of Italian music.

There lies a vast array of instrumental concertos and orchestral music in the works of Andrea Gabrielli, Giovanni Gabrielli, Tomaso Albinoni, Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi, Luigi Boccherini, Luigi Cherubini and Domenico Scarlatti. Composers like Franco Alfano, Alfredo Casella, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Ildebrando Pizzetti and Ottorino Respighi concentrated on writing instrumental works rather than opera.

Ballet, another form had an enormous contribution in the history of Italian Music . They were well appreciated than in any other areas of classical music. Milan particularly, was the center of European choreography in the period of 1400s. Some of the early composers of ballet include Fabrizio Caroso and Cesare Negri. Presently, main Italian opera theaters have ballet companies.

Other forms of Italian Music include Folk music sometimes accompanied by dance styles, Instrumentation, Popular music, Modern pop. The Imported styles of Music in Italy consist of Italian hip hop, Italian jazz, Italian rock, Italian progressive rock, etc.
