The Government of Iran found a major assistance from the United States of America in launching the Iran nuclear program in the 1950s. Though Iran got the assistance with resources and money in the earlier stages from USA, it was curbed since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. At that point of time the Government of Iran put a temporary halt to the Iran nuclear program. But within a few years, the Iran Government restarted their nuclear project with the minimum assistance from Western countries.
At present, the Iran Government is equipped with a number of research sites, a nuclear reactor, a uranium mine and uranium processing adeptness. The Government of Iran confesses that the Iran nuclear program is not intended for attacks on other countries. But the Iran nuclear program is meant to develop nuclear plants. These nuclear plants will enable Iran to generate 6,000 MW of electricity by 2010. Though the U.S. and some other country's officials allege that the Iran nuclear program contains some hidden intentions to acquire nuclear weapons, the Government of Iran has repeatedly denied the allegations. According to the latest report of 2006, the Iran nuclear power is not contributing to the Iranian energy grid till date.
Gawdat Bahgat, the Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania puts forward the logic behind the Iran nuclear program. According to him, the three forces working behind the Iran nuclear program are:
- sensing of attacking threats from Iraq, Pakistan, United States of America and Israel
- the national economic and political forces
- the national pride of Iran
