Persian Carpets

As an integral part of Iranian art and culture, Persian Carpets are perhaps the best and unique expressions of the creative capacities of the inhabitants of Persia. Categorized into three diverse types, namely the Qalicheh, Farsh or “Qalii” and Kilim, Carpets in Persia traces its origin to 3,500 B.C.

As per the historical records, the weaving of Persian Carpets started as early as the Achaemenid period, after which it underwent numerous changes in different ages of Iranian history. Though there was a temporary break in the manufacture of these carpets during the period of Mongolian invasion in Iran, its production reiterated successfully in the following Timurid and Ilkhanid eras.

The making of Persian Carpets started with materials like wool and cotton. However, these are fibers that are subject to decay with passage of time. Hence, it is not always that easy for the archaeologists to trace out the remnants of this exquisite artwork. Those made from silk fibers in the 16th and 17th centuries also had relatively less longevity than its predecessors, adding beauty to the overall appearance of Persian Carpets. Of late, these carpets are weaved from synthetic fibers as well to enhance their durability. But they are less flashy and attractive than the cotton, wool or silk Persian Carpets.

Tabriz, Kashan, Herat and Kerman are the four main traditional centers known for the production of Carpets in Persia. It is until recently that the dealers in Persian Carpets have classified these exquisite artworks on the basis of their types of fabric, designs and diverse weaving techniques. No matter what will be the future trends of making these Persian Carpets, they will continue to hold their worldwide popularity in spite of the high price tags.
