Ahvaz is a major tourist location in the south western part of Iran. The region of Ahvaz has a big stretch from Khoramshahr and Abadan in the southwestern part of Iran to Bandar Abbas in the southern Iran. Ahvaz is regarded as a big industrial and commercial center since the early 20th century. The prestige for its being an important business hub largely goes to Abadan and Khoramshahr which dealt in oil explorations in mass scale. But these locations have suffered damages lately due to the Iran-Iraq war.
The main attraction of the modern day Ahvaz is the Province of Hormozgan. This Province is located around Bandar Abbas. The islands of Kish and Qeshm are the major attractions of tourists to Ahvaz. The three coastal provinces in the heart of Ahvaz are Bushehr, Khuzestan and Hormozgan. But the tourists can enjoy the beauties of the region of Ahvaz only for a short span of time because of the hot and humid weather for most part of the year. The pleasant time to pay a visit is from November to March.
The city of Ahvaz has been mentioned as 'Oksin' in the inscriptions and the Hormoz Shahr in the Sassanid period. The traces of the Tertiary period can even be found in the modern day Ahvaz. Ahvaz is a very smooth land which has been made suitable for cultivation by the Karun River.
The Karun River has divided the city of Ahvaz into eastern and western sections. The modes of communication are very amiable in Ahvaz. The airport in Ahvaz affords the daily as well as weekly flights to major cities like Tehran, Isfahan.
