Headquartered in London, England, Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA) general insurance company was formed with the merger of Sun Alliance (which again was formed with the merger of Sun and Alliance insurance companies) and Royal in 1996, and the acquisition of AMEV in 1997.

Sun Alliance was itself a product of the merger of Sun and Alliance insurance companies. R&SA is the second largest general insurer in the UK and has operations in over 100 countries. It is the second largest general insurer in the United Kingdom and has major operations in the Scandinavia, Canada and the USA.
