Metropolitan Life Insurance Company or MetLife [NYSE: MET ] was found in March, 1868, when a group of New York City businessmen set up the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company to insure those who were affected by the American Civil War. MetLife is headquartered in the city of New York, USA. The company for most of its functioned as a mutual organization, but it went public in 2000. Following its acquisition of Travelers Life and Annuity from CitiGroup in 2005, MetLife became the largest individual life insurer in North America based on sales, the second largest provider of retail annuities, and also the largest provider of institutional annuities. In 2005, the number of employees of MetLife was 65,500.
