Established in 1975 in response to a crisis in the medical professional liability market, Medical Mutual Insurance Company of North Carolina has evolved into the largest insurer of physicians in North Carolina. It was licensed to issue insurance policies on October 23, 1975. The company insures more than 10,000 physicians and other healthcare providers and is the only professional liability company endorsed by the North Carolina Medical Society. The Medical Mutual Insurance Company, Medical Security Insurance Company , and MMIC Agency, Inc. together form the Medical Mutual Group .

In 2000, Medical Mutual had entered into a strategic alliance relationship with Triangle Securities , while in 2003 it had teamed up with Selective Insurance Company to provide physicians with comprehensive business insurance coverage.
