Intermountain Healthcare [formerly known as
Intermountain Health Care (IHC) ], is a non-profit healthcare body and is the largest health insurer in the Intermountain West, the US.
Founded in April, 1975, Intermountain Healthcare is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah and provides hospital and other medical services in Utah, and Idaho. The company presently employs over 25,000 people. Intermountain Healthcare began has been providing non-hospital services such as clinics, and home healthcare since 1982, and in the mid 1990s, it had restructured itself into three major groups of services, those of hospitals, physicians, and IHC health plans. From 2000 through 2005, Intermountain Healthcare was ranked as the topmost integrated healthcare systems in the U.S. (by Modern Healthcare magazine and the Verispan research firm). It has also been the recipient of The Healthcare Forum/Witt award (in 1991). The company adopted a new logo and a changed its name from Intermountain Health Care to Intermountain Healthcare, in November, 2005. Intermountain Healthcare operates as many as 20 hospitals in Utah and Idaho, some of which are Alta View Hospital, American Fork Hospital - American Fork, Bear River Valley Hospital, and others. Besides, Intermountain Healthcare also consists of Life Flight, its medevac unit for emergency air transportation and transportation for victims, particularly those in remote areas.
