Fortis [Euronext: FORA at Amsterdam, and FORB at Brussels) was formed following the merger of N.V. AMEV (Dutch insurer) and VSB (Dutch bank) in 1990 (The brand name of Fortis came into affect in July, 1991). They were later joined by a Belgian insurer called AG Group. A large banking, insurance, and investment management company, Fortis is headquartered in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and Brussels, Belgium. Fortis employs over 56,000 people, and has accomplished acquisition of a number of companies and banks, including Interlloyd, SNCI-NMKN, and others. In July 2006, Fortis has been rewarded with the Euromoney magazine's Award for Excellence trophy as Best Bank in Belgium and in Luxembourg, for the sixth consecutive time. Insurance in Belgium:
Fortis is the largest insurer in Belgium (ranked one in Life and three in Non-life) with a market share of 12%. Insurance Belgium is made up of Bancassurance and Fortis AG.
Insurance in Netherlands:
Fortis Verzekeringen Nederland is the second-largest insurer insurer in the Netherlands. Currently it is working to integrate the three general insurers AMEV, Stad Rotterdam and Woudsend under a single new label - Fortis ASR.
Insurance International:
Insurance International comprises Fortis's insurance activities in the United Kingdom, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, China, Malaysia, and Thailand. In countries where bancassurance is strong, such as Spain, Portugal and Malaysia, Fortis has entered into joint ventures with local banking partners. It has also established joint ventures in Thailand and China. While in France life insurance products are sold through intermediaries and Fortis's own agent network, in Luxembourg life insurance products are sold through brokers and bank alliances.
