Company Profile :

A not-for-profit mutual benefit health insurance corporation, Blue Shield of California (earlier known as California Physicians' Insurance Corporation Life ) was founded in 1939 and is affiliated to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, the USA, and its parent company is the California Physicians' Service, Inc. (which founded the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association). The company is headquartered in San Francisco and it employs 4,500 people and provides primary care physicians as well as specialists personnel totaling over 90,000 (HMO and PPO together). In 1984, Blue Shield became the first health plan to have covered health transplant.

Blue Shield of California Life and Health Insurance Company (or Blue Shield Life ) has also been accredited as "Excellent" by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for service and quality while its financial standard has also been highly rated (in February 2006) by bodies like Standard and Poor's, A.M. Best, and Weiss Ratings, Inc.
