Formed towards the end of the 1920s, BlueCross BlueShield of Texas is the only statewide non-investor-owned health coverage company in Texas. It was the first in Texas to have offered coverage for cancer treatment, catastrophic illnesses, coverage to the poor and elderly and infants from birth, and administer Medicaid and Medicare. The company serves more than 4 million members in all of the Texas counties (254 of them) and also some of the best known Texas companies, including Brinker International, Continental Airlines, the Employees Retirement System of Texas, Halliburton, H.E.B. Grocery, Pilgrim's Pride, the Texas A&M System, Texas Instruments, and others. Its state headquarters is located in Richardson, while the regional headquarters are in Houston, Austin and Lubbock.
