In 1938, the Group Hospital Services (later became known as Blue Cross of Kansas City ) began its operations in Kansas City, while in 1943, Kansas City Blue Shield was formed to provide a prepayment plan for physician services. In 1982, the Kansas City Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans had merged, leading to the creation of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas City (BCBSKC) . The BCBSKC is one of the largest health benefits provider enterprise in the US, serving nearly 900,000 members in 32 counties in greater Kansas City, northwest Missouri, as well as Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. A licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, BCBSKC is a locally-administered independent organization.
