The origin of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) can be traced back during the Great Depression crisis of the late 1920s and early 1930s when a group of Chicago business leaders observed how relatively minor illnesses were ruining families financially. In 1936, in an effort to alleviate it, they launched a not-for-profit company called Hospital Service Corporation to offer affordable pre-paid hospital plan (The Chicago Plan). The idea had proved to be popular and Hospital Service Corporation eventually became Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois today is the largest health insurance company in the state (covering more than 6.5 million members).
