Surabaya

Surabaya is a very important city in the map of cities in Indonesia, Surabaya is the capital city of Java, one of the major provinces in Indonesia. This city has a strategical position in the river mouth of Mas and along the side of Madura strait. And these has made it a very important port city in Indonesia. The name Surabaya has some mythical connotations. According to local myth the name has come from 'suro' meaning shark and 'baya' meaning crocodile who fought to seize the large water body near the city. But some thinks that this myth actually implies some other meanings.

Surabaya has been a coveted place and region for many rulers who had captured and lost this city. Many important rulers have ruled in Surabaya. Some of the important sultanate in Surabaya include, Mataram Sultanate, Banten Sultanate etc. It was later captured by the Dutch as well. Surabaya history states of many activities in this city during World War II also.

As a very important city, Surabaya has good transportation system, administration and also education and other necessary developments also. The city has a n international airport known as Juanda International Airport. Moreover, Surabaya is an important port in Indonesia as well. The transportation system within the city is is also good. This city has good educational institutions also. Some of these are, Airlangga University which is the oldest and biggest public university. Some very good naval academies are also in Surabaya along with a very high standard technological institution.
