Papua is the largest province in Indonesia. Papua has been known by several names over the year. When this province was under the control of the Dutch rulers, Papua was known as Dutch New Guinea. Later, Papua came to known by West Irian or Irian Barat. After that it changed its name when the famous military and political leader of Indonesia, Suharto, named Papua as Irian Jaya. Very recently in 2002, this province has got its official name Papua.
Papua province is administered by a government that is elected with the help of a regional legislature which is known as, Dewan PerwailanRakyat Papua. For a better administration, Papua province is again divided into nineteen regencies which are known as kabupaten in the local language. Among these regencies, Jayapura is the capital city of Papua province in Indonesia and is a very important center of several modern day developments.
Papua has such geographical conditions that marks it with lush green flora and fauna. In the central part of this province there is the high mountain range. This mountain range ensures a huge amount of rainfall in the province that has created thick tropical forest and a world full of biodiversity that is another attraction of this place. Papua is the home to several tribal communities as well. Some of the chief tribal communities of Papua are, Amungme, Asmat, Bauzi, Dani, Kombai and many other tribal groups. Because of these tribal people, a number of events have been developed in Papua. Some of these very traditional events in Papua are, heated stone custom, traditional wedding festival, Etai, Pig feast and many more.
