Padang is the largest city and also the capital of west Sumatra, Indonesia. It is situated on the western coast of Sumatra. It has 750,000 population. The place is mainly inhabited by Minangkabar tribe. Most of the people speak in Minangkabar language. The place came under British domination twice.
Padang is world's 11th trade center. In the 16th century pepper used to be traded too India, Portugal, UK, Netherlands. The Dutch came into the administrative power of Padang in 1663. in 1780 gold was an important trade product. Later on other products such as coffee, tea, spices, textile, rubber, resin, tobacco, rattan, cinchona bark came under the list. Copra is also produced by the farmers. Padang has also got the Om bilin coal field.
Padang is divided into eleven sub districts namely Bungus Teluk Kabung, Koto Tangah, Kuranji, Lubuk Begalung, Lubuk Kilangan, Nanggalo, Padang Barat, Padang Selatan, Padang Timur, Padang Utara, Pauh.
Padang is well-developed in terms of education. Various universities are situated here. Some of them are Andalas University (the oldest Universities of Indonesia), University Negeri Padang, Bung Hatta University, Baiturrahmah University, University Putra Indonesia, Tamansiswa University.
Padang offers some delicious delicacies. Some of the special cuisine are rendang, fried tempeh, stewed greens, chili eggplant, curried fish, sambals, beef liver etc.
