Bekasi is a city situated in the Jabotabek region, to the east of Jakarta, Indonesia. There is a significant amount of urban area surrounding the city of Bekasi, and it is a major trade and commerce location.
Bekasi has a population of about 2 million people inside the city limits. It is surrounded by extensive urban areas. It functions as a commuter city for Jakarta, which is approximately 12km away. Though Bekasi has a sizable number of its own industries, including mainly trade, commerce, business and processing industries, most of the resident commute to Jakarta for work and employment.
The city of Bekasi is further divided into twelve sub-districts. These are - West Bekasi, East Bekasi, South Bekasi, North Bekasi, Medan Satria, Rawalumbu, Bantar Gebang, Pondok Gede, Jatisampurna, Jatiasih, Pondok Melati, and Mustika Jaya.
Bekasi is also the name of a regency in west Java. The capital of the Bekasi regency, Cikarang, is situated 20km away from the Bekasi city.
Since Bekasi is situated near Jakarta, which is one of most important cities in Indonesia, its location makes it a strategic area of trade and commerce. As a result, many satellite towns have mushroomed in and around Bekasi. Towns like these are Harapan Indah and Kemang Pratama.
