Vik is situated downstream from Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which is on top of the active Katla volcano. The volcano is extremely likely to have an eruption soon, which is a constant source of anxiety to the locals, who fear that volcanic activity would have serious consequences such as a flash flood which could destroy the entire settlement.
A very interesting feature of the town, which draws curious visitors is the beautiful black beach which have black basalt columns sculpted by the sea called Reynisdrangar. It is considered one of the most beautiful beached in the World.
Vik is also a very desirable for bird-watchers. On the beach as well as on the nearby mountain Reynisfjall, a variety of birds are to be seen. These include mostly puffins, which are found only in Iceland, and Arctic Terns.
Vik is also one of the wettest places in Iceland. The chance of a rainy day here is higher than the rest of Iceland.
Vik has some functional hotels for housing tourist and inhabitant on an overnight stopover. These include Hotel Edda Vik Plus and Hotel Lundi.
