Selfoss is often referred to as the capital of southern Iceland. A main center of commerce, it is also a central zone for travelers, due to its proximity to many important locations in Iceland. The word “foss” in Icelandic means “waterfall”, but there are no waterfalls in the city, although there is a waterfall of the same name in Iceland.
In 1891, due to the lobbying of Tryggvi Gunnarsson, a member of the National Parliament, a suspension bridge was built across river Olfusa, the most voluminous river in Iceland. This set off the development of the town. The town slowly became a center for agricultural, industrial and tourist services. The population also increased very rapidly.
A main reason for the popularity of Selfoss is its proximity to important locations in Iceland. It is situated at a distance of only 57km from the capital Reykjavik, and is close to locations like Gullfoss, Geysir, Reykjavik, Þingvellir,Skogar, Skálholt and many other beautiful tourist attractions
There are a number of scheduled trips from Selfoss. These trips go to places like the Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir, to Þórsmörk wilderness, to Akureyri and east, and down south to the coast to Stokkseyrar, Eyrarbakka and Þorlákshöfn towns. The National Circular Highway goes through the town, ensuring a constant flow of travelers.
There is a comfortable hotel, a number of guest houses, and a campsite in Selfoss. The Southern High School is situated here, as is the District Library. There is an animal and art museum, and good sport facilities.
The availability of good tourist services, fresh air, very clean water and a relaxing environment ensures that Selfoss is one of the most important tourist locations in Iceland.
