Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland, the northernmost capital city in the World, and is home to around 60% of the total Icelandic population. Situated in Nature's lap, it is the most important city in Iceland, and the gateway to its scenic locations.
The name “Reykjavik” means “Smoky Bay', a name given by Norse immigrants when they came to settle in Iceland and were awed at the sight of steam rising from geothermal springs in the area. Royal Treasurer Skuli Magnusson, known as the “Father of Reykjavik”, set in motion its urban development in the mid-18th century.
The city has varied accommodation options ranging from youth hostels to luxury hotels. There are a multitude of restaurants serving Icelandic food specialties as well as popular international cuisine. Icelandic people are warm and hospitable by nature.
The city's museums and galleries give an insight into the Viking heritage and culture of Iceland. Reykjavik Tourist Cards are issued at various locations in the city and provide free entry to a number of these locations, and also transportation.
Day trips or excursions can be taken from Reykjavik to nearby locations. Popular locations include the Blue Lagoon and Videy Island. Popular activities include whale-watching, riding, boat trips,hiking and bathing in thermal pools.
Major event include the yearly Reykjavik Cultural Night, with programs of music, art, theater, sport food and fashion, and the Reykjavik Arts Festival held in May/June which showcases Icelandic and International art.
Public transport is easily available, and so are conducted tours.
In a nutshell, Reykjavik is the most exciting place to be on Iceland.
