Iceland Northern Lights is one of the most spectacular natural phenomenon occurring in the Polar regions only. The scientific term for the Northern Lights is Aurora Borealis coined from the words 'Aurora',the Roman goddess of dawn and 'boreal',the Latin for north.
The Northern Lights of Iceland is a strange thing. The dark spots on the sun known as sunspots erupt into solar flares. Tons of charged particles are released which travel as solar wind to the earth. These particles enter the earth's atmosphere and strike the gases in ionosphere around the poles. This produces the Northern Lights in Iceland.
The Aurora Borealis appears as streaks or sheets of color, mainly green, dancing in the night sky of Iceland. The colors depend on the particular gas that is struck by the charged particles;oxygen produces red and green lights while nitrogen produces violet light.
The best season to observe the dazzling colors of the Iceland Northern Lights is the darkest months of October to January, though they are visible from September to March. However, any kind of artificial lighting can diminish the astounding beauty of the spectacle. The Iceland Northern Lights have no specific time limit, they can occur for a few minutes as well as for hours.
Northern Lights of Iceland are the most wonderful natural show on earth.
