Landmannalaugar is a picturesque location situated in the Southern Highlands of Iceland. Famous for its natural beauty, it is in close proximity to the world famous active volcano Mount Hekla, and is also a starting point for popular trekking routes. It is part of the much larger Fjallabak Nature Reserve.
Landmannalaugar can be reached only in summertime, and the roads leading to it are open from June till September. It can be reached through bus services, cars, bikes or by hiking.
Landmannalaugar possesses exquisite natural beauty. There are rhyolite b, vast lava fields, moss fields, meadows of wool grass, and steam springs. The mountains are multicolored, and there thrive a multitude of blossoms which defy the cold climate. These include a rare orchid which is only found in Iceland and the Rocky Mountains.
There are a number of warm and cold springs which make bathing a pleasure. There is also an option of taking horse rides to places that are often difficult to access by foot or other forms of transport.
The most fascinating part of Landmannalaugar is the famous four day-long hiking trip to Žórsmörk National Park. The trip is an interesting journey for travelers in Iceland who do not usually give it a miss. There are huts at various locations during the course of the trek which serve and stopovers and resting places. Fishing licenses are also available.
The tourist hut in Landmannalaugar can accommodate around 11 tourists, and there is also a camping area, but with an extremely rocky surface which makes installation of tent-pegs difficult. Food and local maps are also available.
