The landscape in the city and adjoining areas consists of basalt rubble and some resistant plants and shrubs. It is about 50 kilometers away from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik.
Nearby attractions include the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa which is one of the most visited tourist locations in Iceland. Its waters contain beneficial chemicals like silica and sulfur which are extremely good for the skin and help in curing ailments like psoriasis.
The most important structure in Keflavik is the Keflavik International Airport, which is the largest airport in Iceland, and the focal point of all international transportation. It played a major role during the World War II and the Cold War, when it was used to monitor marine and submarine traffic in the Norwegian and Greenland seas into the Atlantic Ocean.
Iceland is a member of the NATO. The NATO military base at Keflavik has been an important place of action. Iceland threatened to close it down during the series of "Cod Wars" between Iceland and the UK to force negotiations with the UK.
