Iceland Islands constitute a major portion of the total landmass of Iceland. Most of the
Islands off the coast of Iceland are uninhabited especially during the winter months. However the
Iceland islands are favored by tourists as perfect places for activities like
bird watching.
The few islands inhabited by people are sparsely populated due to the difficult living conditions.
Drangey-An island made of volcanic tuff,Drangey in the Skagafjordur fjord is a bird watcher's paradise. The steep sea cliffs offer a diverse collection of birds.
Flatey on Breioafjordour-The flat island off the north-western coast of Iceland is occupied only in summer months.Sheep are reared on this island and then taken to mainland in winter.
Flatey on Skjalfandi-This northern island is said to be the place where people first settled. It is a major fishing center.
Grimsey-This island almost 40km off the northern coast of Iceland is situated on the Arctic Circle. It is the northernmost region of Iceland occupied by people.
Hrisey-An island off the northern coast,Hrisey is the second largest island in Iceland.
Surtsey-One of the most famous among the islands of Iceland is Surtsey. It was formed in 1963 when lava from a volcanic eruption underwater solidified. It is off the southern coast of Iceland and is frequented by tourists.
There are smaller islands of Iceland that surround the main island like Heimaey, Kolbeinsey, Engey, Hvalbakur and others.
