Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is a unique feature in Iceland. It is a beautiful hot water lake set amidst the black basaltic lava fields of Iceland. The unusual color and characteristics of the Blue Lagoon has made it a much frequented tourist destination.

The Blue Lagoon appears to be a natural phenomenon but actually the Blue Lagoon has been created by man. The Svartsengi power plant pumps up hot water from underground to generate power in the form of heat and electricity. The clean water produced afterwards is drained in this lake.

The water in the Blue Lagoon is hot because of the geothermal activity inside the earth's crust. The places suitable for bathing have an average temperature of about 40oC. In some parts of the lake the water is so hot that it crosses the boiling point.

The strange color of the water of Blue Lagoon is caused by the presence of blue-green algae and white mud containing silica. The color is described in various terms, the most common being 'aquamarine'.

Almost all tourists visiting Iceland take a relaxing bath in the Blue Lagoon. It is both soothing and invigorating. Besides that the water of the Blue Lagoon is said to contain curative powers as well. The Blue Lagoon adds to the charms of the small but unique island Iceland. The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the picturesque land of Iceland.
