Iceland Hockey

Iceland hockey is mainly the ice hockey game that is played in artificially created ice skating rinks. Though Iceland hockey is relatively new in comparison to other games that are played in Iceland, yet it has already created a huge enthusiasm among the people of Iceland. And is gradually emerging as a very popular and exciting game in Iceland. Iceland generally plays the ice hockey that has its own tradition in Iceland.

Iceland hockey or rather Iceland ice hockey is played both in the national and in the international level. Iceland at present have both the men and women team playing the ice hockey in Iceland. Iceland ice hockey's origin is associated with the name of a small city, Akureyri, in the northern part of Iceland. In the middle of the twentieth century ice hockey was emerging in Iceland. But due to the climate change and ice melting, ice hockey was having a tough time. To solve this problem two ice skating rinks were made within 1990. But these were not adequate and a new ice skating rink was built in Reykjavik before the end of the year 2000.

Iceland hockey has its national league that has three men teams and two women teams. The three men teams are, Skautafelag Akureyrar, Skautafelg Reykjavikur and Bjornin in Reykjavik. On the other hand the two women teams in the Iceland national hockey league are, Skautfelag Akureyrar and Bjornin women teams. The national team of Iceland ice hockey at present ranks forty in the ranking dome by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
