Diplomatic and commercial relations have always prevailed between Iceland and all other nations. Political neighbors of Iceland have been formed on the basis of its earlier and later connections with other countries. Iceland's relationships with some of its political neighbors are as follows:
Iceland and Ireland
Ireland can be called the first of the political neighbors of Iceland as it was the Irish monks who discovered Iceland establishing a political tie between them. Though the Irish did not remain in Iceland for long, their relation has never faded and has been amiable throughout the ages up to the present times.
Iceland and Denmark
Their association had been established in the 14th centuries when Denmark colonized Iceland. Though they have been political neighbors from that period their relationship has always been quite agitated. Iceland came under Denmark in 14th century and it was only in 1904 that Iceland was granted home rule by Denmark. In 1944 Iceland gained complete independence from Denmark and became a republic. Presently Iceland has extended its business in Denmark and shares similar economic traits with it.
Iceland and Norway
Norway too is one of the political neighbors of Iceland and the seeds of their connections were sown in history. In the early ages after the Vikings left Iceland the Norwegians took control of the land. But they didn't remain long in Iceland and were substituted by the Danish monarchy. Though they left Iceland there ties have never severed and today they share a congenial relationship.
Iceland and Canada
Iceland and Canada share a very positive connection that is colored by their spirit of exploration and
discovery. Trade and investment links between these two countries and being close partners in NATO has made them political neighbors.
