Icelandic Independence day

Icelandic Independence day is celebrated on 17th June. Iceland got its Independence from Denmark through its own legislature in 1874 and finally declared as the republic in 1944.Despite being a very small state in North Atlantic the country has proved its capability in such a small time and emerged as a highly developed country. It holds great lesson for its two overseas autonomies,the Faroe islands and the green land along with Denmark. June 17th is chosen as Icelandic Independence Day because this day is celebrated as the birthday of Jon Sigurosson,who was an eminent figure of the Icelandic culture. He was the leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement seventy years later Iceland became an independent republic in 1944.

Since Icelandic Independence day is also the birthday of national hero Jon Sigurdsson(1811-1879) so this day has its own huge way of celebration. The day starts with solemn and patriotic notes along with the large gathering of the crowds to celebrate the birthday of the national hero. Parades starts from each urban area and school children participates in the processions. After that various open speeches are held out in public places and there is a traditional way of celebrating the independence day by recitations of poems by the women folk dressed traditionally and are commonly known as Fjallkonam(women of mountain).But by the end of the day the variety changes and fun pours in. Everybody enjoys the Independence day of Iceland by the various eye catching street performances,fire-eaters,theaters and all this add to the perfect Iceland Holiday mood.

Independence Day in Iceland is celebrated with variety of colorful parades,speeches,sports competition and plenty of dancing and outdoor entertainments. Every small town of Iceland and even the remote villages of the country has its own way of celebrations. So its advisable for the guests to check out the various possible places in this national event and enjoy the varied styles of celebrations. Due to its significance this date has been adopted for annual celebration of Iceland's independent republican status and is one of the major Iceland holiday's. Traditionally it is expected to rain on Icelandic national day but statistics proved that its like any other normal day of June.
