Bursting Day

Bursting day is another unique celebration of Iceland where its basically a kind of food celebration. Though Bursting day is celebrated in various parts of the globe but it has different names in different regions. It's other sister names are Madri Gras,Shrove Tuesday,Fat Tuesday and Pancake day.
French called it as “Madri Gras” and its literal meaning is fat Tuesday and its a custom of parading a fat ox in the street and then having a rich meal before the fasting begins. Some cultures believe in having pancakes before the fasting day and so its called as Pancake day in some places. Shrove Tuesday is the derivation of Anglo -Saxon term “shrive”and customary it refers to the confession and getting absolution on the previous day of Lent. Bursting day is celebrated on February 27th and this event particularly occurs between Buns Day and Ash Wednesday,

Bursting Day in Iceland is commonly known as “Sprengidagur”.Icelanders typically celebrate Bursting Day or Shrove Tuesday by having a culinary feast and that's even has some traditional significance Food mainly comprises of salted lamb meat with split pea soup. Usually on Shrove Tuesday smoked lamb were served but from the 18th century the Icelanders preferred salted lamb and hence the tradition goes on. The term 'Sprengidagur' is the derivation of the German word “Sprengen”(Sprinkle) but in Icelandic term the word means burst and its an way of saying to eat out as much as you get burst out. Traditional meals are not only cooked in homes but the Restaurants also oozes out the various meals and people really eat out this day at the point of bursting.

On the event of Bursting Day people generally gather in groups and dine out together to celebrate the foody occasion and after this event the period of fast begins. Other than Iceland the term Shrove Tuesday is also used in countries like united kingdom,Ireland and Australia. Some other cultures like Germans and Polish eat different kinds of Dough nuts on this day and its part of their tradition.
