Buns Day

“Buns Day” the name itself speaks about its origin and its counted among one of the public Iceland Holidays. Two days before Lent is commonly known as “Bolludagar” or Buns day and it can again be called as eat out festival quite similar to Bursting Day. Icelanders celebrate two holidays in February and both of them has one thing in common and yes its none other than the consumption of delicious gourmets on this particular day. Two days before of the lent period the houses, bakeries and restaurants are flooded with delicately made cream buns and these buns comes in different forms. They are either filled wit h cream, jams or dipped in creamy chocolate sauce.

Bun day in Iceland is usually associated with children and they enjoy the most and a story follows behind it. In this particular day children get up early from bed and they have the ritual of beating their parents with “Bun-wands” individually made by them. Children's decorate their Bun wands with colorful bright stripes of paper and tie them with gleaming ribbons. The no.of times they beat the parents the no.of buns they receive for it. Parents are then obliged to give their darlings those creamy puffs and pastries.

The ritual of” Bun day” migrated from either Sweden, Denmark or Norway to Iceland somewhere in nineteenth century. These countries have their own Bun specialist .The preparation of Buns undergoes number of processes and its taken due care. Major ingredients for buns are melted butter,flour,eggs , water and variety of creams and fruits are used to garnish the bun and enhance its taste. Two main types of buns are Yeast Buns and chouk-like pastry buns and other kinds of buns are also baked.

Thus the celebration of Buns day is much popular festival before the beginning of the auspicious month of Lent.
