Iceland Prime Minister is the leading figure in the Iceland government. The Prime Minister is elected by the Althingi or the Parliament election in Iceland. In this election, several political parties of Iceland competes. But the major vote winner party forms the government and the representative of that political party becomes the Prime Minister of Iceland.
Prime Minister heads the government offices in Iceland. He is the main figure in all government related issues. Once the Iceland President and the several political parties decide among themselves about the possible Iceland Prime Minister, depending on the result of the election, the President then appoints the new Prime Minister of this Republic and democratic country. The Prime Minister also administers the cabinet of which he is the chief.
Prime Minister holds a number of executive powers to execute in the country. The officeof the Prime Minister, generally known as the PMO, is a kind of secretariat to the appointed Iceland Prime Minister. This office helps the Prime Minister in executing his/her duties. The PMO assists the Prime Minister in political, administrative and other works. It also helps in maintaining co-ordination between several organizations and policies taken by the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister is elected through election and hold office until the next Parliamentary election. The present Prime Minister of Iceland is the representative of the Independence Party and was appointed in 2006 on 15th June. The name of the present Prime Minister of Iceland is Geir Haarde.
