President of Iceland is the head of the State power in this country. Iceland choses its president through Presidential election. President in Iceland has many powers and responsibility given to him/her by the constitution. There have been five presidents in Iceland since it gained its independence from the rule of Denmark.
The president of Iceland is elected for a period of four years. This election is called the Presidential election. So far the last Presidential election in Iceland was held in the year 2004. Once the president is elected he holds his office for a period of four years and there is no term for this presidential post or office in Iceland's constitution.
The president of Iceland is the constitutional head and therefore has a number of powers as well as responsibilities towards the state. But, though the president is vested with a number of powers by the constitution, he can not use them in reality that much since he is more a representative and leading figure of the country. In case of Iceland, this representative role of president has come from the fact that previously the the Danish kings had similar representative roles and the president is believed to be a successor of the King of Denmark.
The President however, has the duty of creating the cabinet and appoint the Iceland Prime minister. When the President can not perform his/her duties due to any valid reasons, the President of the Parliament and the President of the Supreme Court jointly execute hi/her powers.
