Iceland Parliament is called 'Althing'. Iceland parliament was established long back in the past and is thus can be said to lay down the foundation of an independent country of Iceland. Iceland parliament or Althing was established in 930 AD. Previously this early Iceland parliament used to hold its parliamentary sessions in a place called Pingvellir that is near to the capital Reykjavik. At present the name of Iceland parliament is still the same Althing but now the parliament holds its session in the capital Reykjavik.
Iceland Parliament has at present six constituencies. Until 1959, however, there were eight constituencies under the Iceland parliament. From every constituencies, nine members are elected. Seats are allocated according to the proportion of the national vote that each political partycan get. In this island country, very high proportion of political participation can be noticed in the parliamentary> election.
At present there are five political parties in Althing, the Iceland parliament. These parties are, The Independence Party, The Left Green Movement, The Liberal Party, The Progressive Party and The Social Democratic Alliance. The representative from each party gets seat in the parliament in Iceland. The number of the seats are maximum in the case of the Independence Party in Althing now.
There are president and vice president in Althing. The duty of the president of Althing is to see that rules and laws that are mentioned in the constitution regarding the activities of parliament are followed duly by everyone associated with the Althing.
