Election is a rudimentary part of Iceland government or rather the Iceland parliament. Election in the Iceland political background becomes important as Iceland is a democratic Republic. And election here choses the head of the government, the prime minister and also the Iceland president are elected through the process of election. That is why election is a very important part of Iceland government as well as in its politics.
Election is the most important part in the Iceland politics. All the heads of the government in Iceland are elected by democratic voting or election system in which there is a high level of participation in Iceland. The President of Iceland is elected for a period of four year through Presidential election. The Iceland Prime minister, who is the head of the Iceland government is also elected for a period of four year and through Parliamentary election or Althing election. Iceland President, after the election of the prime minister, appoints the Prime minister and other ministers in the Cabinet.
The are many political parties in Iceland who vie with each other in the election for the seats in the Parliament or Althing. Iceland has a multi party system among whom the election takes place. Some of the most important parties in Iceland are, Independence Party, Social Democratic Alliance, Progressive Party, Left Green Movement and the Liberal party. At present the Prime minister of Iceland is leading the Independence Party. The very recent Iceland Parliament election was held on 12th May 2007.
