Iceland Constitution

Iceland Constitution has been in effect since the day this country has gained its independence. Constitution of Iceland came into being and effect from 17th June in the year 1944. This is the present Iceland constitution. But the interesting fact is that, Iceland had a constitution long before the present constitution was adopted. This early constitution of Iceland was in effect since 1874. This constitution which Iceland had while still it was a part of the Danish kingdom, had been amended several times. As a result of these important amendments women were given voting right and Iceland was given Home Rule.

Iceland Constitution that is now the main source of laws in this country, has several parts and articles to mention in detail the various rules, laws and obligations for a good administration of the country. This constitution says that Iceland is a Republic country and its the power of the state is divided into three parts. These three parts are, legislative, executive and the judicial power. The constitution of Iceland, makes it clear that the power of the legislative authority comes from the general people election in this democratic country. The executive power relies on the legislative power through many the organizations that represent the government. But the judicial part of the state power is totally independent.

Iceland constitution in its many sections deals with the several part of the government. The first section of Iceland constitution states the country that has parliamentary government. The second section deals with the president position and his/her election and powers. In the third and also in the fourth section the constitution touches the subject of Iceland parliament known as Althingi.
