A lot of
islets are scattered around the main
island of
Iceland. There are a number of beautiful little
islets that can be found near the location of
Iceland. Some of these
islets are inhabited and again some
islets are there that are not inhabited. Some of these
islets that are near the country of
Iceland are,
- Drangey: This is a very nice islet that is located in one of the fjords that Iceland has. With this islet many Icelandic sagas and myths are associated. But in reality this is an islet that was formed with the remains of some volcano. This islet is remarkable for its variety of birds and their life circles here. People from near by habitation visit this islet during the spring to collect eggs of birds.
- Eldey: This is another famous islet that is situated in the south western part of Iceland. This islet is only ten miles away from the peninsula of Reykjanes. This islet has an area of only 0.03 square kilometers and its altitude from the sea level is only 77 meters. This islet is another famous habitation of a wide number of species of birds among which the most prominent are the Gannet birds.
- Flatey: As the name suggest, this islet is totally flat with no hill in it. The total area of this islet is two km wide and one km. Long only. This islet is mostly inhabited during the summer season. Yet this islet has always remained one of the cultural centers of Iceland.
