Icelandic Horses are a breed developed from Celtic or Germanic ponies that were brought to Iceland during the 9th century. Horses of Iceland are strong,friendly and dependable. The small size of the Icelandic Horses even when they are fully grown have led to their being thought of as ponies.
Horses bred in Iceland are small compared to other horses. Their approximate height is about 128 to 148cm. They are sturdy with a straight profile, strong shoulders and a flexible back. Thick tail and full mane are characteristic features of Icelandic Horses. In winter, a thick layer of fur grows on their body that keeps them protected from the cold. They have expressive almond-shaped eyes. Icelandic horses are found in almost all the general colors.
Horses of Iceland are friendly and courageous. Though they possess a lively spirit they can be easily trained. They are loved by all riders for their nature.
Icelandic Horses have strong joints and tendons which help them to move without any difficulty on the rough, rugged terrain as well as the glacial rivers of Iceland. These horses are not only used by pleasure riders but also for transport and traveling.
The horses in Iceland mature at a slow pace. They have a long lifespan and they are not ridden before they are 5years of age. Most of the horses bred in Iceland are for the purpose of riding. Many farms breed, buy and sell Icelandic horses. Competitions are also arranged to classify the best Icelandic horses.
