Geothermal power in Iceland is one of the major energy sources in the country. Geothermal power is nothing but the a natural energy or power of nature or earth. The cause of the origin of the geothermal power is the movement of the tectonic plates of the earth. As a result, the volcanoes are the main sources of the geothermal power in earth. Now, since Iceland is located at such a location where the earth is very active, geothermal power is plenty in Iceland.
Geothermal power is of immense use. In Iceland geothermal power is used to serve the demand of heating the houses to combat with the extreme cold weather and also this geothermal power is a great source of electricity in Iceland. Iceland is the proud owner of this natural resource and has been using it for several centuries. One of the major advantages that geothermal power has, is that, it does not produce any green house gases that the other types of fossil power sources produce and thus geothermal power does not create pollution. Iceland has abundance of geothermal energy and as a result the cost of heating and electricity are very cheap here.
There are five major geothermal power plants in Iceland. Together with hydro power, this geothermal power provide all the power requirements in Iceland. Geothermal power plants alone supply approximately 26% of the total power requirement of Iceland. Among the five geothermal power plants in Iceland, three are meant only for producing electricity and the two other produces hot water and electricity both.
