Iceland currency is known as 'Krona'. The meaning of the currency of Iceland, named krona, is 'crown'. This meaning indicates to the Nordic settlement and reigns in Iceland. Krona is again subdivided into hundred parts that is known as 'aurar' in plural and 'eyrir' in singular.
Iceland's first coins were issued in the year 1922 when it gained its autonomy from Danish rules. The first coins of Iceland were of the value of 10 and 25 and was subsequently followed by the denominations of 1,2 and 5 till 1946. But due to the fall of krona value, new coins were issued in the year 1967.
The first banknotes in Iceland currency, was introduced in the year 1885. The Lansssjod Islands was the bank to issue the first 5, 10 and 50 kronur bank notes. Now the Central Bank of Iceland issues all the bank notes. Currently there are 500. 1000 and 5000 krona bank notes that are most frequently used in Iceland. There is 2000 krona denomination as well but it is not as widely used as the other denominations and is sometimes called the 'tourist money'. The coins in krona that are used widely in Iceland are, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 kronur.
Iceland is part of Europe but does not recognize the use of the Euro currency since it is not a member of the European Union. However, currently the Foreign Ministry of Iceland is considering the idea and possibility of adopting the use of Euro currency without taking the membership of EU.
